Project: Critical Website Migration & Infrastructure Modernization
Client: Elmasar News
Industry: Independent Arabic-Language News Media
Challenge: Migrate and secure a 70+ GB news portal with no server credentials while maintaining 24/7 uptime during political crisis coverage.
Elmasar News, a prominent independent Arabic-language news organization, was covering critical regional developments when their technical infrastructure began to crumble. Their website, burdened by 12 years of accumulated multimedia content exceeding 72 GB, was experiencing frequent downtime during peak traffic events. Their hosting contract had expired, and their previous IT vendor had severed ties without providing server credentials or proper documentation.
Elmasar News faced an existential threat to their operations:
The situation required not just a migration, but a secure, real-time transition with zero tolerance for data loss or significant public downtime.
Web Ascend orchestrated a high-stakes, phased operation focused on data recovery, security, and creating a seamless user experience throughout the transition.
1. The “Read-Only” Rescue & Real-Time Sync:
Since direct server access was impossible, we deployed specialized crawling agents configured to respect robots.txt but meticulously map and download all public content—articles, image galleries, and embedded video assets. Crucially, we set up a real-time content sync for the 48-hour period before the final cutover. As Elmasar’s journalists continued publishing on the old site, our system captured new articles and appended them to the migration batch, ensuring no story was lost.
2. Strategic Content Triage & Architecture:
Instead of a blind migration, we conducted a strategic analysis:
3. The Zero-Downtime Flip:
We executed a late-night DNS switchover, using the CDN to seamlessly route users from the old site to the new cached version. For a 12-hour “grace period,” our sync system ensured any last-minute admin activity on the old server was captured. The audience experienced no interruption in access to breaking news.
Web Ascend delivered a secure, powerful, and sustainable platform that turned a critical vulnerability into a competitive advantage.
“When you’re reporting on fast-moving crises, your website cannot be another crisis to manage. Web Ascend performed a technical miracle—they extracted our entire digital history without keys to the vault and rebuilt it stronger while we never stopped publishing. They didn’t just migrate our site; they secured our journalistic mission.”
